Board of Ed. discusses flooring expenses

Despite detailed research by one member of the Chilton County Board of Education, one other member still seems to think there are discrepancies in what the school system is paying for flooring maintenance.

After the issue was raised at a previous meeting, board member Joe Mims researched expenses and presented his findings at Tuesday’s meeting.

According to Mims’ information, which he said was compiled with help from staff at the central office, the school system has paid an average of $9,939 per month over the last 35 months, from January 2013 through November 2015.

Mims noted that the system includes 1,137,486 square feet of heated space, including 125,123 square feet of concrete floor and 1,012,363 square feet of tile or carpet.

So, the school system spends about 1 cent per square foot of flooring per month, Mims said.

But fellow board member Pam Price said she did not think Mims’ information was accurate and that she was doing her own research.

Price said there are multiple vendor numbers for payments that have been made for flooring, which leads her to conclude that expenses are higher.

Central office staff at the meeting said the figures that were provided to Mims included both vendor numbers, though one was an “old” number.
