Mustangs advance to state tournament

The sixth-ranked Isabella volleyball team defeated No. 5 Pleasant Home on Saturday for the Class 1A South Super Regional championship.

The Mustangs won 3-1 (25-23, 25-12, 17-25, 25-21).

Synia Chattman had 12 kills, 13 blocks and five digs; Jayda Jones had 11 kills, three aces and 15 digs; Kinley Tuttle had nine kills, five blocks and one dig; Makaela Littleton had three kills, one block, 12 assists and five digs; Hailey Underwood had six kills, three aces, 16 assists and eight digs; Brianna Tyler had four aces and two digs; Caley Booth had two aces and 14 digs; and Sohpia Underwood had eight kills, three aces and 16 digs.

Coach Glen Graham told the girls after the game that all the hard practices, teamwork and smart playing is what got them to this point. He told them he was proud of them and they deserved to be champions because they played like champions the whole weekend.

The Mustangs will play Brilliant in the first round of the 1A state tournament at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Birmingham CrossPlex in Bessemer.

IHS defeated Fruitdale in the third round of the regional, 3-0 (25-18, 25-8, 25-9) to advance to the championship round.

Against Fruitdale, Jones (six) and Chattman (four) had the biggest shares of the Mustangs’ 23 kills, Littleton had one block, Hailey Underwood had seven of the team’s 21 total aces and 12 of the team’s 18 assists, Littleton had six assists, and Booth (11) and Sophia Underwood (six) had the biggest shares of the team’s 29 digs.

In the second round, Sophia Underwood served Isabella from a narrow 10-8 lead in Game 1 to a 25-8 win.

The Mustangs then won the next two sets, 25-8 and 25-6.

Of Isabella’s 34 kills, Chattman had 12, Hailey Underwood had 10 and Jones had six.

Of the team’s nine blocks, Chattman had seven.

Of the team’s 14 aces, Jones had seven.

Of the team’s 44 digs, Jones had 13, Hailey Underwood had nine, Sophia Underwood had eight and Booth had seven.

Of the team’s 20 assists, Hailey Underwood had 11 and Littleton had seven.

Isabella defeated Linden in straight sets (25-13, 25-11, 25-8) in the first round.

Chattman led the team with nine kills, followed by Jones with seven. IHS had 23 total kills.

Tyler had 16 of the team’s 21 aces.

Hailey Underwood had 14 of the team’s 26 assists.

Hailey Underwood had 14 of the team’s 39 digs, followed by Jones and Sophia Underwood each with 11.
