FRIDAY NIGHT PREVIEW: Red Devils pulling for local rival

Published 9:35 pm Wednesday, October 21, 2015

The last region games of the season will be played Friday.

While the playoff fates of many local teams is already decided there will be a couple of games that will determine postseason berths and seeding.

Thorsby travels to Francis Marion on Friday in a game to determine the third and fourth playoff seeds in Class 2A, Region 4.

The Rebels already have a playoff berth clinched, but a win Friday would break the tie in the standings and give THS the No. 3 seed, and thus a more favorable match-up in the first round of the state playoffs on Nov. 6.

In an interesting scenario, Verbena finds itself hoping for local rival Billingsley to win on Friday.

Billingsley travels to Autaugaville Friday for a Class 1A, Region 3 game.

If the visiting Bears win, they secure the No. 3 seed in the region, and Autaugaville and Verbena would be tied for the fourth spot.

Because VHS defeated Autaugaville, 61-26, in Week 3, the Red Devils would earn the fourth and final playoff berth in the region.

However, if Autaugaville defeats Billingsley, the Eagles would claim the third seed and BHS and VHS would be tied for fourth.

Billingsley topped Verbena, 28-9, on Sept. 18, so the Bears would earn the fourth bid and the Red Devils would be left out of the postseason.

Billingsley would seem to be the favorite in the game, though Autaugaville has improved since its early loss to Verbena.

The Eagles came back the next week and defeated Isabella, then hung tough against Notasulga on Sept. 18. After two non-region games and a bye week, Autaugaville shocked second-seeded Loachapoka last week.

Verbena players, coaches and fans will be holding their breath in hopes Billingsley can stop the Eagles’ run on Friday.
