Some people rely on assistance in the form of food from the Son Light Center and its founder and organizer Betty Oldroyd.

On Saturday, Oldroyd and the center in Jemison will be the ones receiving the assistance.

Faith Hubbard and Angela Hubbard said they decided to come together and organize the first “Celebrate Son Light” event to give back to Oldroyd for what she does in the community and to raise money to help with some of the expenses associated with running the center.

The event will be held from 3-8 p.m. Saturday on Main Street in Jemison.

“We love Mrs. Betty and the Son Light Center. She does so much for this community, and it gets expensive on her part,” Faith Hubbard said. “Mrs. Betty began in her own truck, taking bread to the local families around her. She is pretty awesome, and she gives all her glory to God.”

Beginning about 10 years ago, Oldroyd began feeding people out of her own truck.

“We are a food pantry, and we distribute food not only to Chilton County but also to other counties within the Black Belt,” said Oldroyd, who takes a truck to feed some of the poorest counties in the state.

These days, the Son Light Center is feeding more people than ever before. The center has gone from feeding 10 families to feeding 4,000 a month.

“God put it in my heart because there was such a need,” Oldroyd said. “It’s amazing when you go south and people are waiting in line for us.”

The Celebrate Son Light event will include live entertainment, activities for kids, food, vendor booths, silent auction and Christian karaoke from 6-8 p.m.

Entertainment will be provided by Alton Russell and God’s Deliverance, Randall Edwards, Anita Ramsey, Faith Hubbard, Dena Bond, Sanctified, Christian Music Services and more.
