The Thorsby Town Council voted on Monday to hire PYRO Productions Inc. to put on the town’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show.
Mayor Jean Nelson told the council she contacted the company for a price quote for the celebration, which will be held this year on July 1.
The event typically includes a fireworks show, singing by members of local churches, a prayer for the country, a tolling of bells and placing of a wreath under the American flag at Richard Wood Park.
The fireworks show will cost $2,900, Nelson told the council.
Everyone present voted in favor of the motion to hire the company for the fireworks. Councilman Randall Higgins was absent from Monday’s meeting.
Public Works Director Terry Jackson told the council of recent problems he has noticed with the restrooms being “trashed” at Richard Wood Park.
Jackson suggested the council consider locking the restroom doors during the evening hours when no one would use them.
Thorsby Police Chief Rodney Barnett said the police department could lock the doors each night after 8 p.m. and keep them locked until around 7 a.m. each morning.
The council also voted to repave Jackson Street and enter into a contract with the county to chip seal the road.
The council also heard an update about the Movies in the Park series that will begin Friday.
The movies will be shown the first Friday of June, July and August in addition to the May 22 movie.
In the past, the movies have been shown every Friday of each month, but this year there will only be four films shown.
The films will be shown on a large screen in the town’s Richard Wood Park, and will begin at dark, about 6:30 or 7 p.m.
The movies are free to anyone who would like to come. The Thorsby Fire Department organize the events, and attendees of the event are asked to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs.
Typically all movies shown at the park are rated G or PG.
As of Monday night, the movie to be shown on Friday had not been announced.
The council also voted to transfer and pay all necessary bills and approved the council minutes from the May 4 meeting.
