The Jemison City Council unanimously voted Monday to approve a $1,000 donation to the Jemison High School Robotics Program.

There was a brief discussion prior to the vote about how much the school was requesting from the council and where the money would come from.

A representative from the program told the council they were requesting $2,000, but the council said they could only commit to $1,000 now and consider donating an additional $1,000 at a later date.

“We want you all to know that we support this program 100 percent,” Mayor Eddie Reed told a group of students who attended the council meeting. “We wish we could do more, but we think you do an awesome job.”

The council also voted to approve $750 to Majik Karpet for the cleaning of the carpets in all offices, the courtroom and library at Jemison City Hall.

Reed told the council this has been the first time in about four years the carpets have received a thorough cleaning.

The council also amended an ordinance establishing regulations for the use of alcoholic beverages in the Jemison Municipal Auditorium.

The ordinance now allows beer, wine and champagne to be served in the auditorium.

Additional regulations included in the ordinance state that a licensed bartender must be employed by the group providing alcoholic beverages for consumption, and a license must be obtained from the city for $125.

Groups must also sign a written contract relieving the city of any and all liabilities for the use of alcoholic beverages served, and groups are required to employ security officers at a rate of $25 per hour.

An additional regulation included in the ordinance states that any use of alcohol at the auditorium should conclude at 10 p.m.

The council also met in executive session to discuss pending litigation but took no action after the executive session concluded.
