A memorial service was held Friday afternoon in Clanton to honor three individuals who died in a car crash on Saturday.

Robert Paul Gallet, 50, Damian Lee Gallet, 23, and Devan Jerica Gallet, 21, all of Billingsley, were remembered by friends and family at Martin’s Funeral Home in Clanton.

“There is nothing in this type of situation that will give you the appropriate words,” Pastor Tony Smitherman said. “We have all gathered here today because you had a connection with these individuals. Whether you are a family member, a friend, a coach or a fellow student, you have special memories of these people.”

The Gallets were passengers in a vehicle, that collided head-on with a vehicle on Highway 22 at County Road 516, seven miles south of Clanton, on Saturday at 1:15 p.m.

All five individuals involved in the crash were killed.

As a slideshow of photographs documenting different periods of life in the Gallet family including birthdays, prom photos, family gatherings and the birth of Devan Gallet’s son, Colton Edwards, played on a screen during the service, Smitherman encouraged those in attendance to have “faith” when dealing with difficult times.

“This is a situation that no one is prepared for,” Smitherman said. “This has been such a blow to this family, but we are reminded to have faith in the Lord when we are hit with hard times.”

Smitherman also called on family and friends to remember Melody Gallet, wife to Robert and mother to Damian and Devan, in her time of grief.

Smitherman said he met with the family prior to the service to get an accurate depiction of who each individual was in the Gallet family.

“I wanted to be able to learn who each person was and what sort of personalities they had,” Smitherman said.

When describing Robert, Smitherman said he learned that Robert was most often described as “kind-hearted,” “caring,” “tough” and someone who cared for “independent rights.”

“I was also told that he was quite the LSU fan and he loved to cook,” Smitherman said.

Family and friends remember Damian Gallet as “laid back,” “sweet,” a “football fan” and someone who “loved to cook.”

Smitherman said he found the words used most by friends and family when they described Devan Gallet were “spunky,” “tough,” “outspoken” and the fact she loved the beach.

“Another thing that caught my attention when people were describing Devan to me was that she was a friend,” Smitherman said. “That stood out to me because if a person is a friend to someone that means that they must first show themselves friendly, and I think that is a special characteristic of Devan. We may not understand right now the trials we are going through, but the Lord will help us during this time of pain and suffering and we can rest assured knowing the Lord will guide us through it all.”
