Clanton’s City Council on Monday gave Mayor Billy Joe Driver approval to proceed with the purchase of 60 acres of property off Temple Road.
The city will purchase the property for $5,000 an acre, for a total of about $300,000.
The property is near Clanton schools and adjacent to other property owned by the city that is part of the Clanton Country Club.
The council, deliberating at a regular meeting at Clanton City Hall, was not as receptive to a request by a local resident to drop flyers from a helicopter to promote a food drive for the Chilton County Emergency Assistance Center.
Though Driver said he would like to help the EAC, which distributes food to those in need and in the event of an emergency, councilmembers questioned whether dropping the flyers would essentially constitute littering, and who would be responsible for cleaning up the flyers.
The commission voted unanimously to disallow dropping the flyers, and Driver said he would contact the person organizing the effort to notify them of the council’s decision.
In other business, the council:
•Approved the hire of Derrick Wyatt to a full-time position with the city’s sanitation department.
•Heard from Janice Hull with the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce about the success of the recent “Trick or Treat Streets” Halloween event in downtown Clanton. Several businesses participated in the event, which provided a safe trick-or-treating environment for many local children.
•Approved the minutes from the Oct. 27 meeting and paying the necessary bills.
Councilman Greg DeJarnett was absent from Monday’s meeting.
The Council’s next regular meeting will be at 5 p.m. Nov. 24 at Clanton City Hall.
