Maplesville senior Colby Chambers was the Class 1A, Region 3 winner of the Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete Award, carrying on a sort of family tradition.

Chambers’ sister, Heather, was a regional winner in 2010, and the siblings’ father, Keith, was the state winner in 1987.

Chambers attended a banquet April 14 at the Birmingham Sheraton Hotel as 96 high school regional honorees were recognized and awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships.

The MHS student was joined by two grandparents, his parents, sister and girlfriend, and then Ashlie Harrison, Dene’ Carter and Eric Bailey from the school also attended.

Harrison is the school’s assistant principal, Carter is Chambers’ Spanish teacher and Bailey is a coach and physical education teacher.

Chambers said he enjoyed hearing from speaker Carson Tinker, a former University of Alabama football player whose girlfriend was killed during a tornado that struck Tuscaloosa in 2011.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions also spoke, and attendees were treated to a meal and talk about how the Bryant-Jordan program began.

“I had a lot of fun,” Chambers said. “It was interesting seeing everybody there, knowing that there are all these other great scholar-athletes out there.”

Chambers holds a 4.0 GPA and is valedictorian of his class. In addition to his sports activities, he has attended Alabama Boys State and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, among other accomplishments.

After graduation from Maplesville, he plans to attend Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa.

Chambers was nominated by his school, according to football coach and athletic director Brent Hubbert.

“The nomination is based on athletic and academic performance,” Hubbert said.

The program, named in honor of the late coaches Paul “Bear” Bryant of Alabama and Ralph “Shug” Jordan of Auburn, recognized 48 regional scholar-athlete winners selected for their excellence in athletics and academics and 48 achievement winners chosen for their ability to overcome major obstacles during their high school careers.

Dothan High School’s Jack Stansell and Chelsea High School’s Maygen Boaz-Jeffords were named the overall winners at the 29th annual Bryant-Jordan Student Athlete Awards Banquet.
