A youthful offender hearing was postponed until May 27 after the Clanton suspect in an Autauga County murder failed his court-ordered drug test on Monday.

Richard J. Tyus, 20, of Clanton, appeared in Autauga County Circuit Court Monday morning for a youthful offender hearing in front of Circuit Judge Sibley Reynolds.

Chief District Attorney C.J. Robinson with the 19th Judicial Circuit including Chilton, Elmore and Autauga counties confirmed Monday that Tyus failed a court-ordered drug test and Reynolds revoked his bond.

The youthful offender hearing was rescheduled for May 27.

Tyus is facing murder charges stemming from a September 2013 stabbing incident in Prattville.

In January, the case was presented to the Autauga grand jury and his charges were upgraded to murder.

Autauga County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Chief Joe Sedinger said Tyus allegedly stabbed Brian Bernard Bristow, 28, of Marbury on Sept. 30, 2013.

The incident occurred after the men were watching a football game and got into an argument, Sedinger said at the time.

Bristow died Oct. 24, 2013. The case was the only homicide investigated by the Autauga Sheriff’s Office for 2013.

During his arraignment Feb. 10, Tyus claimed he acted in self defense.

Youthful offender status is available to defendants between the ages of 18 and 21 who have no prior criminal record.

Mickey McDermott, the attorney representing Tyus in the case, said the fact that Tyus failed his drug test does not mean he is guilty of the murder charge.

“Richard has never even had a traffic ticket,” McDermott said. “He is a student.”

Tyus will remain in jail until his hearing in May.
