Men’s basketball

Taylor Hughes (Chilton County 2010) tallied two assists and one rebound for Huntingdon College (0-5) in an 89-73 loss at Auburn Montgomery (3-8) on Nov. 25 in Montgomery.

For the season, the junior has competed in three games and made one start to total nine assists and nine rebounds.

As a dual-sport athlete, Hughes did not appear in a game until Nov. 20 as he was playing quarterback for the football program.

On Dec. 16, the Hawks will travel to Birminham-Southern (4-1) in Birmingham.

Trey Bryant (Jemison 2012) has competed in three games for Huntingdon to contribute one assist and one rebound.

Women’s basketball

Markeshia Bailey (Maplesville 2013) participated for Wallace Community College-Selma (2-6) in a 73-50 loss at home against Gadsden State Community College (8-2) on Nov. 23 in Selma.

For the year, the freshman has contributed in five contests and made one start to tally one rebound.

On Dec. 14, WCCS will travel to Southern Union State Community College (6-7) in Wadley.

Sharonda Cooper (Thorsby 2012) has competed in seven contests and made five starts to contribute a scoring average of 2.6 points per game for Falkner State Community College (5-3).

On Dec. 13, FSCC will resume competition at home against Faulkner University (4-4) in Montgomery.

Football

Anthony Johnson (Maplesville 2013) and No. 12 Jacksonville State (11-3) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs following a 31-10 triumph against No. 5 McNeese State (10-3) on Dec. 7 in Lakes Charles, La.

The freshman nabbed one reception for 11 yards for the Gamecocks, who relied heavily on a rushing attack that contributed 263 yards and three touchdowns.

In total yards, JSU bettered MSU by a margin of 383-301.

In six trips to the red zone, the Gamecocks finished with four TDs and one field goal.

In three trips, the Cowboys ended with one TD and one field goal.

Both teams ranked among the FCS Top 25 by the Simple Rating System poll released on Nov. 24.

On Dec. 14, JSU will resume competition at No. 3 Eastern Washington (10-2) in Cheney, Wash.

Johnson will enter the game with 31 catches for 368 yards and three TDs.

Javae Swindle (Jemison 2012) was named to the Daktronics All-Super Region Two first team, which was voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced on Dec. 5.

To garner the recognition, the sophomore running back led West Alabama to a record of 8-3 by contributing more than 1,300 total yards to complement 13 total touchdowns.

En route to being named All-Gulf South Conference first-team, he led the GSC in rushing yards (1,296), rushing touchdowns (12) and yards-per-carry (8.9).

Women’s indoor track and field

Lori Davis (Billingsley 2012) placed 18th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 11.61 at the Birmingham Southern College Icebreaker for Alabama State on Dec. 6 in Birmingham.

The meet was not scored.

From Jan. 10-11, the Yellow Jackets will resume competition at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazer Invitational in Birmingham.
