Students from the LeCroy Career Technical Center’s Public Service Academy participated in three training drills Wednesday on Crowson Avenue in Clanton to learn about law enforcement activities.

“The students are conducting three drills including building clearing, crime scene investigation and traffic stops in effort to train for a state competition in February or March of 2014,” Chilton County Sheriff’s deputy David Hubbard said. “There are 38 kids out here today working on these drills.”

Members of the Clanton Police Department’s tactical unit along with the Chilton County Sheriff’s Department’s tactical unit combined their training with the students.

Clanton Police Department Sgt. Cameron Bates said one of the drills presented a scenario of a residential alarm call where the front door of the home had been kicked open.

“Oftentimes we will get an alarm call and when we respond to the residence we find the door has been kicked down and someone may still be inside the home,” Bates said. “This drill trains the students to figure out what they need to look for when responding to that call and how they would approach the situation.”

The Public Service Academy is designed to educate students in grades 10-12 about issues in law enforcement such as criminal investigations and homeland security, as well as other topics including firefighting techniques and fire safety.

Hubbard said many of the students enrolled in the Public Service Academy have a variety of occupations they would like to pursue after graduation.

“Some of the students want to be jail employees or go into the military,” Hubbard said. “Some just like the discipline of the class.”
