Clanton’s City Council on Monday agreed to let the city’s police department declare three vehicles surplus—including one that is to be donated to a student training program.

After making sure the CPD markings would be painted over and alternative insurance would be secured after the vehicle is dropped from the city’s insurance, the council voted unanimously to donate the 1998 Ford Crown Victoria to the Public Service Academy at LeCroy Career Technical Center.

Councilwoman Mary Mell Smith was absent from the meeting.

David Hubbard with the Academy thanked the council and Mayor Billy Joe Driver for the gift.

“It’s going to be a positive thing for these children’s future,” Hubbard said and added the cruiser would be used to train for traffic stops and not actually driven by students.

The council also approved the application of two grants for the city’s fire department.

One grant application in the amount of $245,000 was to pay for half of a new fire truck estimated to cost $490,000.

The other grant was 5 percent of $113,190 in personal protective equipment and heart monitors.

The grants would be through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency through the Department of Homeland Security.

In other business, the council approved paying bills and the minutes from the Nov. 11 meeting.
