A Thorsby man is recovering after apparently accidentally shooting himself over the weekend.

Authorities responded to a call of an accidental shooting at a residence off Dakota Avenue about 3 p.m. Sunday, Thorsby Police Chief Rodney Barnett said.

The victim told police he was unloading his 9mm Glock handgun when it discharged, striking him in the hand and upper leg area.

Barnett said he visited the 40-year-old victim in the hospital, and he is recovering.

“It was serious but yet not serious enough for an extended stay or surgery,” Barnett said. “It certainly could have been life-threatening.”

A family member was at the residence at the time of the shooting but was in another room and unharmed, Barnett said.
