District Court Judge Rhonda Hardesty ruled Wednesday there is enough evidence for a case involving a September stabbing incident in Verbena to be sent to a grand jury.

Steven Lee Driver, 37, appeared in court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing after being charged Sept. 27 with assault in the first degree for the stabbing of his brother, Bruce Driver.

Hardesty denied Driver’s request to lower the bond amount of $20,000.

Driver has been held in the Chilton County Jail since being arrested.

Chilton County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Jeff Cobb was the only witness called Wednesday to answer a few questions about the stabbing incident.

Cobb said he first made contact with Driver at his residence after an altercation with his brother where both subjects had been cut with a knife.

According to Cobb, alcohol was involved and Bruce Driver had a large laceration to his abdomen and left wrist from a pocketknife.

Cobb presented photos he had taken the day after the incident of Bruce Driver’s wounds that had already been treated at the hospital.

Hardesty asked Steven Driver if he would like to ask Cobb a question regarding his testimony about the incident.

“What about the injuries I sustained?” Driver asked Cobb.

Cobb said Driver only showed him one cut on his finger.

Driver said he did not wish to testify and Hardesty said there was enough probable cause for the case to be presented to a grand jury.

The grand jury in Chilton County meets twice a year, once in February and once in August and it is up to the District Attorney’s office to determine when the cases will be presented.
