After learning that terms for current board members have expired, the Chilton County Solid Waste Authority voted during a special called board meeting Tuesday to make recommendations for the positions to be reappointed.

Solid Waste board member Allen Payton told some of the board Tuesday that positions for the Solid Waste Authority have expired and a vote needed to be taken to recommend positions for the Chilton County Commission to reappoint.

“We essentially have no authority right now until we give recommendations of names to the commission,” Payton said.

County Attorney John Hollis Jackson explained that board members should have staggered terms and the members should be composed of four mayors or council members from the four municipalities, one from the county independent haulers association and the rest being citizens of Chilton County.

Jackson said those that would be reappointed by the commission would serve terms that would expire at different times.

The two-year terms would expire June 25, 2015, with the four-year terms expiring June 25, 2017, and the six-year terms expiring June 25, 2019.

Currently, nine members serve on the board including Maplesville Mayor W.C. Hayes, Clanton Mayor Billy Joe Driver, Jemison City Councilman George Brasher, Thorsby Mayor Jean Nelson, Joe Jackson, Allen Payton, Rose Landrum and two inactive members Bud Harrelson and Samuel Hicks.

According to Jackson, five of the positions can’t change including the four municipalities and the private hauler.

Jackson suggested current board members send a list of names to the commission and the commission would consider that list at the next meeting on Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. (rescheduled due to Veterans Day holiday).

After the commission nominates the positions for the board, they will hold the nominations open until the following meeting Nov. 26 when they would approve the positions.

Payton made a motion to recommend to the commission the current members of the board, with the adjustment of Nix and Harrelson who have been inactive, be reappointed.

Payton told other board members to locate several names who would be interested in serving on the board to submit to the commission for consideration.

The Solid Waste Authority meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Thorsby Annex.
