Summer reading program kicks off at Jemison Public Library

The Jemison Public Library kicked off the summer reading program with this year's theme, "Dig Into Reading" at the Jemison Municipal Complex on Monday. The weeklong event will have a special speaker each day from 10-11 a.m. at the Jemison Public Library.
Illustrating daydreams was the topic of Monday’s summer reading program at the Jemison Public Library.
The theme of this year’s program is “Dig Into Reading,” and librarian Tammie McGriff organized the weeklong event with a special speaker scheduled for each day from 10-11 a.m. at the Jemison Public Library located inside Jemison Municipal Complex.
This is the second year McGriff has organized the reading program open to ages 5 and above.
“We just want everyone to get excited about reading,” McGriff said. “I give prizes out to those who read the most books and try to make it fun for everyone.”
Monday’s program, taught by Kenny Bearden, allowed kids to construct a picture illustrating something to do with nature.
Bearden brought pieces of scrapbook paper, glue and markers and showed the children different pictures to create after reading a book about using the imagination.
McGriff said the rest of the week will include programs from the Chilton County Master Gardeners on Tuesday taught by Sondra Henley where kids will have the opportunity to plant seeds in egg cartons.
On Wednesday, Jo Walter, a Chilton County 4H Regional Extension Agent will read a book titled, “Literature in the Garden” and allow kids to plant a garden in a glove, and Dr. Lisa Green will speak on Thursday about fossils.
Chilton County Regional Extension Agent Josh Elmore will conclude the program on Friday with a class about fire ant control.
No registration is required for the program, but McGriff does prefer for parents to stay at the library during the program.
