The Chilton County Sheriff’s Department is gearing up for the second women’s educational class this month, with the focus this time on firearm safety.

On June 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chilton County YMCA and the range in Thorsby, the sheriff’s department will host the first firearm safety class to educate those who are interested in learning about how to properly use a firearm.

Investigator Erric Price said the sheriff’s department thought the class would be beneficial for women throughout the county who own firearms but don’t necessarily know all of the details about using them.

“With everything going on in the country right now with discussions about firearms, more people who have firearms are being reminded of how to use them,” Price said. “We are going to cover things about when they can deploy their guns and instances to use a gun. Pretty much all aspects of firearms safety will be covered during this class.”

The class is available on a first-come, first-served basis and anyone interested in participating must complete and return a registration form and waiver.

Last week, the sheriff’s department held its seventh women’s self-defense class at the YMCA.

Price said he is hoping the firearms safety class will be beneficial to those attending and hopes to make it an annual event.

The class will begin at the YMCA with a classroom discussion about firearms and will break at 10 a.m. to go to Thorsby and set up for the second part of the class.

Price said the second portion of the class will more than likely begin at 11 or 11:30 a.m.

Anyone interested in participating in the firearm safety class must bring their own firearm, ammunition, eye protection and hearing protection.

The class is free and designed for women ages 13 and older and anyone under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
