Movies in the Park schedule finalized

The fifth season of Thorsby’s Movies in the Park will feature a larger screen and some film selections that appeal to adults as well as children.

Thorsby’s Fire Department shows the movies on a large, outdoor screen at Richard Wood Park beginning at 8 p.m. each Friday during the summer.

Those who come to watch bring their own chairs or blankets to sit on.

TFD Chief Lee Gunn said the screen this year is about twice as large as the one used in previous years.

“It should be a lot nicer, and everybody should be able to see it better,” Gunn said.

This year’s line-up of movies is as follows:

•May 31: “Brave,” sponsored by Thorsby First Baptist Church.

•June 7: “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” sponsored by the town of Thorsby.

•June 14: “Hotel Transylvania,” sponsored by Thorsby Dental Clinic/Dr. Michael Ford.

•June 21: “Men In Black 3,” sponsored by Probate Judge Bobby Martin.

•June 28: “The Lorax,” sponsored by Clanton Family Dentistry/Dr. Chris Smith.

•July 5: “Here Comes the Boom,” sponsored by Peoples Southern Bank.

•July 12: “Madagascar 3,” sponsored by state Sen. Cam Ward.

•July 19: “Jack the Giant Slayer,” sponsored by Ellison-Cleckler Funeral Home.

•July 26: “Wreck It Ralph,” sponsored by Pates Chapel Baptist Church.

•Aug. 2: “The Pirates: Band of Misfits,” sponsored by Mystic Mini Mart, City Pawn and Top Nail.

Gunn said it costs $300 each to screen the films, and the sponsorships pay for the sreening, meaning the town doesn’t have to spend any money on Movies in the Park.

Another change this year is that not all of the selections are animated. Gunn said some residents said they wanted to see more mature films, so some non-animated movies were incorporated into the schedule.

“It’s just a good time for them to get out,” Thorsby Mayor Jean Nelson said about residents enjoying Movies in the Park. “It’s not just Thorsby; people come from all over.”
