Thorsby received just one bid for the backhoe it is selling, and the bid of about $4,000 was well below the $10,000 minimum the town council set at a previous meeting.

The bid was opened at the council’s regular meeting on Monday.

Bids will be accepted again for the machinery.

The council also discussed selling some other town property: the old manufacturing building on Highway 31.

Mayor Jean Nelson said the county tax assessor’s office has appraised the property, which includes about 5 acres of land, at more than $231,000.

“I’d like to see it put on the market and try to sell it,” Nelson said.

Council members seemed to agree with Nelson that a sale of the property would be a good idea. They agreed to have the property surveyed and to discuss the matter further at a future meeting.

In other business, the council:

•Tabled approval of the parks and recreation committee’s minutes from a previous meeting pending explanations of some of the items in the minutes.

•Approved Lee Helms Associates to facilitate the installation of a storm shelter in the town for more than $2,000.

•Donated $100 to the Chilton County Baseball Tournament, which is being played this week.

•Heard from Glenn Littleton about the upcoming Chilton County Water Festival.

•Moved that if town clerk Crystal Smith is absent from a meeting that Julie Smith would take the minutes.

•Voted against installing a pole light for a resident of Franklin Street.
