One cent of Jemison’s sales tax will go toward debt reduction beginning May 1, 2013.

The Jemison City Council unanimously approved a motion to approve one cent of the city’s sales tax earmarked for debt reduction during their meeting Monday.

Mayor Eddie Reed told the council the money would primarily go for sewer debt.

The council opened up the meeting to a public hearing to discuss allowing an alcohol license for Dev Food Mart AKSH, LLC, a new business opening in Jemison. Reed told the owner of the food mart he was happy to have a new business in Jemison and welcomed him to the community.

The council voted to approve a retail beer (on and off premises) and a retail table wine (on and off premises) license for the food mart.

The council also voted to approve water adjustments for C. Monks JR., Millard Cox, Gussie Littlefield and Dazella Peoples.

Before the meeting adjourned, Henderson reminded Reed that a price needed to be set for cemetery lots at Pine Hill Cemetery.

Reed told Henderson the council would discuss the rates at a future work session.

The council learned in 2012 that Pine Hill Cemetery was property of the city of Jemison.

Citizens can still purchase grave plots in Pine Hill, but the council has to determine a price for the plots.
