The Clanton City Council gave permission for a local historical group to clean up the city’s cemetery.

Katherine Reece with the Chilton County Historical Society addressed the council at its meeting Monday about the need to clean and replace headstones at Clanton City Cemetery.

Reece said her organization has undertaken such clean-ups at other local cemeteries, volunteers are versed on protocol for historic headstones and all expenses would be covered by the historical society.

“The cemetery is well-maintained, but there are some things that need to be done,” Reece said. “We’re basically just asking for permission.”

After some questions about the project, the council gave Reece permission for the clean-up, which will be held at a date to be determined later.

The motion to allow the group to clean up the cemetery was contingent upon workers signing a waiver to release the city from any responsibility should an injury occur.

In other business, the council:

•Tabled a decision about whether to participate in a weather preparedness tax-free holiday until more information could be obtained. Council members said they would have until January 2013 to make a decision.

•Heard from city parks Director Sally Wall about difficulty in scheduling events at Clanton City Park’s ball fields. Council members Greg DeJarnett and Jeff Price said they would work with Wall to find a solution.

•Heard local residents’ concerns about illegal and dangerous activity near their home. Council members and Clanton Police Chief Brian Stilwell assured the residents that the city was working to alleviate the situation.
