Rally planned in support of CCHS baseball coach

Josey Shannon apparently has many supporters interested in saving his job as baseball coach at Chilton County High School, though it’s not clear how or why his job is in jeopardy.

A group called “Saving Coach Shannon” was created on Facebook. More than 2,500 people were invited to voice their support Tuesday at an open meeting of the Chilton County Board of Education.

More than 400 people declared their intention to attend the meeting, where, according to the Facebook page, the “board will be meeting to discuss the matter of Josey Shannon and his position.” Petitions were being circulated around town, to be signed by those who wouldn’t be able to make the meeting.

But county schools Superintendent Dave Hayden said nothing related to Shannon is on the agenda for the regular meeting, which will be followed by an open meeting where local residents can voice concerns about education in the county.

“There’s nothing on the board agenda for tomorrow, and as for the future, who knows,” Hayden said.

CCHS Principal Greg DeJarnett said he doesn’t plan to bring any recommendation regarding Shannon before the board.

DeJarnett said there are ongoing “issues” with the school’s baseball program but declined to elaborate.

DeJarnett declined to answer a question about whether he expected Shannon to be the baseball coach next season.

Shannon said he wasn’t aware of any issues with the program that would lead to him not being brought back as coach.

Shannon is a tenured teacher at Clanton Intermediate School, so the question seems to only pertain to his role as baseball coach.

Shannon said he would like to know what his future holds as soon as possible—both for his benefit and that of the CCHS baseball team.

“There is scheduling and fundraising to be done,” he said. “I’m not trying to cause problems. All I want is for people to be upfront with me and let me know what’s going on. Is it time for me to start looking for something else, or time to start getting these guys ready for next year?”

The team’s season—Shannon’s fourth at the helm—ended May 11 at Spanish Fort in the semifinal round of the Class 5A state playoffs. It was the furthest Chilton had advanced in the playoffs since 1991.

The Tigers compiled a 35-9 record this year and were ranked as high as No. 8 in the Alabama Sport Writers Association’s weekly polls.
