Swinging for the fence: Chilton County catcher Kricket Caton connects with a pitch Tuesday during an area tournament game against Paul Bryant. The Tigers defeated Bryant, 4-1, to guarantee a finish of no worse than second place in the tournament and a berth in the regional round of the playoffs.
Chilton County’s softball team punched its ticket to the regional round of the Class 5A state playoffs with Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Paul Bryant.
The win guaranteed CCHS at least a second-place finish in the area. The Tigers fell twice to area champion Brookwood, 2-1 and 5-2.
The top two teams in each double-elimination area tournament advance to the regional round, which will be played May 11-12.
CCHS defeated Central-Tuscaloosa, 24-1 in 2 1/2 innings, in its first game of the day.
Then came the first loss to Brookwood, despite Chilton outhitting their guests 8-2.
Facing elimination from the tournament—and the conclusion of their season—the Tigers scored two runs in the second inning, scored two more in the fourth and then hung on against Bryant.
Lindsey Parrish and Lauren Stewart touched home plate in the second thanks to consecutive singles by Brooke Sheffield and Brooke Lewis.
Parrish and Stewart also scored Chilton’s runs in the fourth, on groundouts by Sheffield and Lewis.
Kadie Coker was the winning pitcher. She cruised through the first six innings but ran into trouble in the seventh.
The bases were loaded with a walk, an error and a hit. Another error allowed a run to score, but Coker got out of the jam without allowing another run.
