A grant as part of the Family Violence Resource Initiative could benefit Chilton County.

Gov. Robert Bentley awarded an $18,726 grant to the Elmore County Commission for a program to aid domestic victims and prosecute offenders in Chilton, Elmore and Autauga counties.

The Family Violence Resource Initiative works with law enforcement agencies, judicial personnel and communities to identify and address signs and causes of domestic abuse. The initiative’s resource coordinator helps victims obtain protection orders, prepare them for court appearances and find safe housing and counseling.

“Victims of domestic violence need and deserve professional help to escape the cycle of abuse,” Bentley said. “I commend the initiative for its commitment to helping victims and for their pursuit of justice.”

The coordinator, an employee of the district attorney’s office, serves as a liaison between the courts, victims and police and handles about 35 cases annually.

Bentley awarded the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Justice Department. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the award. Local matching funds of $6,242 will supplement the grant.
