The Chilton County Commission on Monday submitted four road projects to the state in hopes of obtaining a grant.

Engineer Tony Wearren presented the commission the list: resurfacing of County Road 59, resurfacing of County Road 51, replacing the bridge on County Road 32 and replacing the bridge on County Road 2.

“We may not get any of these, or we may get all four,” Wearren said.

The commission unanimously approved the list but discussed adding even more projects to its proposal. The deadline to submit potential projects to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management is March 31.

Wearren said the federal government allocated more than $2 million to the state for road projects. Criteria have been established for the kinds of projects that would qualify for grant money.

In other business, the commission:

•Discussed a debt owed the county by a local businessman with his representative, Mitchell Spears. The businessman owes the county and the town of Thorsby combined more than $132,000 in unpaid sales taxes. Spears presented a plan in which the Montevallo resident would pay the county a lump sum of $50,000 and then monthly installments of $2,500 until the debt is paid off, under the condition that accrued interest and late penalties were waived. The commission denied the proposal, 6-1, with Heedy Hayes voting against rejecting the plan.

•Heard from Jennifer Kamerer, the former Veterans Affairs official for the county. Kamerer told the commission that she is concerned about representation for the county’s veterans since her dismissal from the office. Commissioners seconded her concern and said they would look into the matter to ensure the county’s veterans receive proper assistance.

•Extended a road department agreement with ADEM for the removal of scrap tires from the county’s roadways.
