UPDATE: Verbena tornado had 125-mph winds

Published 3:16 pm Saturday, March 3, 2012

The tornado that came through Verbena on Friday packed winds up to 125 miles per hour.

A National Weather Service survey team has confirmed EF-2 tornado damage near Verbena. They estimated wind speeds at 120-125 mph.

The team has found multiple well-built homes with heavy damage and at least one crushed manufactured home. Hundreds of trees were either snapped or uprooted.

The crew credits, in part, the use of NOAA weather radios in that no injuries were reported.

Teams will continue to survey damage along the storm’s trek from Marengo County to Chambers County. The greatest damage appears to be in Chilton County and Tallapoosa County (where there was one fatality).

Check back for updates from the NWS survey as they are available.
