Chilton County Schools Superintendent Dave Hayden signed a proclamation for National School Breakfast Week in a Board of Education meeting Feb. 21.

This year’s campaign, “School Breakfast – Go for Gold,” will be March 5-9 and will highlight how eating a balanced breakfast at school can help students succeed.

In other business, Greg Nobles of the Clanton Evening Lions Club asked the board to approve the club’s use of land behind the alternative school to plant a community garden.

“We’re just trying to help the community,” Nobles said. “We’ve got a lot of people excited about it. We’re going to set it up so they can come out there and plant.”

Angie Barnett of Thorsby School presented information to the board regarding a child abuse/abduction prevention program.

Barnett spearheaded the Child Lures Prevention Program at Thorsby, the only school in Chilton County that teaches the program.

“We would want all of our children to have this training,” Barnett said. “We want to do prevention in our schools. It could be a mandated part of our health curriculum.”

The board approved the following school requests:

•Chilton County High – permission for Ray Sosa and DECA members to travel to Atlanta for a field trip on April 18.

•Isabella – approval for Brian Milligan as contract substitute ($70 per day) for a teacher on leave effective Jan. 23 through March 9.

•Maplesville – permission for Pam Ousley and Maplesville High School students to travel to Atlanta for a field trip on April 6; and approval for the Central Alabama Red Devils to use the football stadium for five home games this spring.

•Verbena – approval of Mark Cleckler’s resignation as assistant varsity and junior varsity softball coach; approval of Thomas Ricky Atcheson to fill this position; permission for Bob Taylor to teach a free computer workshop for the Verbena community in the school’s ACCESS lab beginning Feb. 23 for ten weeks; and permission for Verbena Youth Baseball and Softball League to use Verbena facilities for games and practices.

•Bus shop – permission for Raymond Davidson to be paid for fueling six additional buses (30 total) retroactive to the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year; and permission to add a School Choice Route at Verbena School for the remainder of this school year with driver paid at substitute rate.

•LeCroy Center – permission to pay a driver and use a school bus to transport Health Science students for clinical rotations.
