The amount Clanton residents pay for garbage pick-up will soon increase for the first time since 1994.

The cost for household garbage pick-up will increase $3 a month, from $12 to $15. The charge for dumpster pick-up will go up by $10, from $50 to $60 per pick-up.

The Clanton City Council approved the increases at its meeting Monday night.

Mayor Billy Joe Driver said while the city hasn’t had to raise rates in almost 20 years, a small increase was needed this year because of continually rising landfill costs.

In other business, the council took the following actions:

•Awarded a $6,150 bid to install security cameras at Clanton City Park’s playground, concessions and other areas to SCC Electronics out of Montgomery.

•Police Chief Brian Stilwell advised the council to adopt a policy at its next meeting concerning how his department will enforce the state’s new immigration law. Stilwell said Clanton PD have so far checked the immigration status of one person, who turned out to be in the country legally.
