The Chilton-Clanton Public Library is kicking off this fall with a lecture from Dr. Julie Hedgepeth Williams, a journalism professor at Samford University, on Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. in the library’s conference room.
Williams will give a presentation on her book titled “Wings of Opportunity: The Wright Brothers in Montgomery, Alabama, 1910.”
Williams received a B.A. in English and history from Principia College in Elsah, Ill., and a master’s in journalism and a Ph.D. in mass communications from the University of Alabama.
“She’s the first author we’re going to have, but I do plan on having more,” said Kelly Easterling, Chilton-Clanton Public Library director. “I just really want a lot of people to come.”
Easterling said the library hasn’t had an adult lecture series in a long time, which is something he wants to change as the new director.
“We have children’s programs, but we don’t have anything for adults, so that’s part of my agenda,” Easterling said. “I’m kind of going in a new direction.”
Easterling said Williams’ publishing company, NewSouth, Inc., contacted him first about having the lecture.
“Her publicist called me and asked if I would be interested in her coming down here to talk about her book,” Easterling said. “Then, I got in touch with Dr. Williams. She was thrilled about it.”
After her presentation, Williams will sign copies of her book, which will be available for purchase at the library as well.
“She does questions and answers,” Easterling said. “Plus, she’s a professor, so I’m sure she’ll make it interesting.”
The Chilton-Clanton Library holds a children’s story hour every Tuesday, and Easterling said he would like to start an adult book club that would meet once a week.
“I really want people to be interested in the library,” Easterling said.
