Several local all-star teams are making an impact in Dizzy Dean youth baseball tournaments. Squads from both North Chilton and Clanton leagues are still competing in the postseason.
•The Clanton Dizzy Dean 7-and-under all-star team recently won its regional tournament, in Calera on June 20. The team went 4-1 in the tournament and beat Calera in the finals. They will play in the state tournament in Columbiana beginning July 1.
•The Clanton Dizzy Dean 8-and-under all-star team finished its district tournament on June 20 and qualified to play in the area tournament, which will be held in Springville beginning June 24.
•The Clanton 9-and-under all-star team won its regional tournament on June 20 in Chelsea with a 3-0 record. They defeated North Chilton in the finals. They will play in the state tournament in Albertville beginning July 1.
•The Clanton 10-and-under all-star team placed third in the district tournament in Vincent on June 20. They advanced to play in the area tournament, which will be held in Moody starting June 24.
•The North Chilton Orioles 11-and-under baseball team won its regional tournament in Chelsea on June 21.
The Orioles had to play a double-header against Chelsea, and the first game was claimed by Chelsea in a close, 5-4 game. The Orioles started the second game and went down 2-0 in the first inning.
By the fourth inning, the Orioles were trailing, 6-1, but fought back to tie the game 6-6 in the sixth inning.
North Chilton was the home team and had the last at bat. With the game tied, no outs, and runners on second and third base, the Chelsea coaches decided to intentionally walk Tyler Williams in order to get to a batter that had popped out in his last three at-bats.
With the bases loaded, Will Johns came up to bat and knocked in the game winning run with a shot into centerfield.
The 7-6 win advances the Orioles to the state tournament in Cullman as a No. 1 seed for District 12. The tournament begins July 1.
