Chilton County High jumped out to a big lead early, and held off a late rally to beat Isabella, 12-6, on Day 2 of the Chilton County Softball Tournament.
CCHS scored 4 in the bottom of the first after April Lewis brought in Amanda Whorf, Rachel Johnson and Brianna Cleckler on a double. CCHS added another run later in the inning, and by the end of the third, had a 10-1 lead.
Isabella came alive in the fourth. After a pair of runs made the score 10-3, a three-run homerun by Kristen Adams brought the Mustangs to within 4. That’s as close as the host team would get, as CCHS would tack on two more runs in bottom of the fourth to make it 12-6 before time was called.
“I’m proud of the girls,” said Coach Krisi Parrish. “We hit the ball better. We’re glad to get the win.”
In the second game, two big innings was all it took for Thorsby to take down Verbena, 9-0.
The Rebels scored 4 in the first, on a pair of singles by Josie Adams and Haley Barnett and a Red Devils’ passed ball.
The second through fourth innings were a duel between Thorsby’s Taylor McManus and Verbena’s Chanin Hancock, with neither team scoring a run.
Thorsby loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, and a pair of singles, a passed ball, a fielder’s choice made the lead 9-0.
“[It’s a] good win,” said Thorsby coach Kim Payton. “We held them to a shutout, and we had the bad going at the beginning of the game and then at the end.”
McManus took control of the game on the mound for the Rebels, allowing no runs and striking out 6.
Chilton County and Maplesville were set to play in the night-cap Friday. Results were not available due to an earlier press deadline.
Single elimination games start Saturday morning at 9 and continue until the 5 p.m. championship game.
