Applications taken for Habitat for Humanity homes

Habitat for Humanity will be holding a family application fair at Clanton First United Methodist Church on April 2 at 9 a.m.

The organization is planning to build two homes for qualifying families in Chilton County.

During the fair, families will learn the details of what it means to be a partner and a homeowner with Habitat with Humanity.

Families will be evaluated on their need, ability to pay and willingness to partner.

If a family meets those qualifications, a family selection committee will verify information like income and expenses, perform an interview and verify living conditions. The committee will then present the information to the board, who will choose the family.

A potential homeowner must agree to complete 400 hours of sweat equity, which consists of volunteering to assist in the construction of someone else’s home, as well as helping build their own home and taking homeowners educational classes.

“We will go over the qualifications and how the process will work,” said Kelly Nice, director. “Those who attend will need a picture ID, copies of sources of income and bills, fill out the application and sign the release forms giving us permission to verify their information.”

It will take approximately 45 days after the application fair for the first set of people to be notified whether they meet qualifications for the program.

“Right now, we have a house in Clanton that we will start building in a week that was chosen last spring,” Nice said. “It can take up to a year before the house gets built.”

A presentation regarding Equal Housing Opportunity details and qualifications will be given so those who arrive late, after 9:10 a.m., will not be permitted.
