The youth of Rocky Mount Methodist Church in Jemison are having their fifth annual quilt fundraiser and are inviting everyone in the community to participate.

The youth are once again trying to reach out to those less fortunate during the holiday season by raising money to provide food for the underprivileged.

“It is a wonderful thing to see young people work toward helping others in their community,” said Charlotte Powell, event director.

For each $2 donated, the person’s name will be put into a basket, and on Dec. 19, someone will receive the quilt as a “thank-you” gift for their participation.

This year’s quilt, “The Hanging Garden,” was custom made and donated by Allegra Parker Glasscock, who also made last year’s World War II memory quilt for the event.

“She spent a great deal of time and effort making the quilt,” said Powell. “Last year’s winner was Evonne Lackey.”

Using an oriental theme this year, Parker evoked thoughts of the time Jesus spent kneeling in prayer as he faced the job he had to do. 

“I think this fundraiser is going to go extremely well and is going to receive a good response even with the recession because it is a beautiful quilt,” said Powell.
