Minooka Park will host a summer celebration this Saturday to highlight the grand opening of its new RV campground.

Park manager Gerald Arrington said the gates open at 9 a.m., and admission to the park is free as always. Free hot dogs and other food will be available to those who attend.

A poker run will be held from 2-6 p.m., a fishing tournament from 5-8 p.m., and ATV riders can ride until 10 p.m. with approved lights.

The poker run will award 100 percent payback and costs $10 to enter. The fishing tournament costs $5 to enter. The angler with the biggest fish wins the pot.

The event will also tours of the new campground.

We’ve had a lot of calls and interesting from folks who say they’re coming,” Arrington said. “I think we’re going to have a big crowd.”

Arrington is excited to see several months of planning the RV campground finally come to fruition.

“We just want people who enjoy camping to come out this weekend and take a look at it,” he said. “We have a lot to offer because it’s out in the woods, and there’s plenty of room between each campsite. We want people to come and know they have an option as far as where they can take their families and campers to enjoy a weekend out in the woods.”

Arrington also said those who enjoy riding ATVs should find something special to enjoy about the weekend considering they’re allowed to ride until 10 p.m.

“Because it’s been so hot, a lot of the riders are looking forward to the night rides and bale able to stay on the trails late, which is important to them. Nobody wants to ride in the afternoons right now.”

The park has 18 sites, most of which have full hookups for water, power and sewage.
