A 20-year-old Birmingham man has been arrested and charged in connection with four burglaries that happened early Friday morning.

Jarvis Deon Shaw faces multiple counts of burglary, theft of property and criminal mischief. He was released from the Chilton County Jail after posting bonds totaling $54,500.

Shaw is accused of allegedly breaking into four businesses before dawn on Friday, July 16. The four businesses burglarized were Tex’s Bar-B-Que, Spyder’s Custom Tattoo, a dentures business owned by Ocie DeVaughn, and Dari-Delite North.

Police communications started getting calls from business alarms around 4:30 a.m. While officers were responding to those calls, a passenger noticed a person climbing out of a window of the Dari-Delite North on U.S. 31.

Officers were within a couple of blocks of the restaurant when Officer David Kline noticed a vehicle leaving the area and relayed that message to Officer Robert Bland, who followed the vehicle.

A chase started after Bland tried to stop the vehicle. The suspect’s black Ford Expedition crashed at the intersection of Enterprise Road and Lowery Avenue. A short foot pursuit followed into a field near Jackson Avenue.

Several stolen items, including a safe, were found in the back of the SUV.

Clanton Police Detective Freddie Mayfield praised Kline and Bland for their quick work and arrest.

Authorities have since found out that the SUV Shaw was driving was stolen out of Hoover. Mayfield expects Shaw to be arrested again on receiving stolen property charges to be filed against Shaw as early as Monday.

All four businesses suffered some kind of damage, including broken windows and doors, Mayfield said.

A female passenger was allegedly in the vehicle with Shaw. Mayfield said he does expect charges to be filed against the passenger but couldn’t discuss those citing the ongoing investigation.

It isn’t clear why the suspect came to Clanton, other than looking for loot.

“They came out of Birmingham, looking for a place they could try and find a safe,” Mayfield said.
