Jefferson State Community College will once again offer a free program for displaced workers at its Clanton campus.

The iCADEMY Prep Program is recruiting students to attend healthcare courses that give them an opportunity to take a certified nursing assistant exam and potentially find a job.

Director of community and corporate education Kay Potter said the course can hold up to 25 students, but the school is seeking a minimum of 10. If the minimum is not reached, Jeff State cannot offer the course.

The program will include a classroom component and a hands-on component for people interested in jobs in healthcare or manufacturing.

Those interested should attend a career fair at Jeff State’s Clanton campus on July 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. when individuals can learn if they are eligible to enroll. The Alabama Career Center will determine eligibility through a series of questions.

The classroom component consists of two levels of training. The first is a three-week course of basic work skills such as computer, reading and resume writing.

The second level is a month-long course of field-specific training. Healthcare students will study medical terminology, anatomy and Spanish, Potter said.

The manufacturing and welding course will not be offered this fall.

“I think the program has been phenomenal,” Potter said. “The students are quickly prepared to go out and look for a good job. That’s what it’s designed to do, to prepare people to go back to work.”

The program’s grant is funded by the US Department of Labor. Classes begin July 22 for certified nursing assisting.
