Chilton County’s Taylor Hughes and Isabella’s Blake Lawley will represent their high schools one last time Friday during the North-South All-Star football game.

The game is part of the 12th annual Alabama All-Stars Sports Week, held this week in Huntsville.

Both players will compete for the South team, under head coach Randy Ragsdale from Trinity Presbyterian. New Billingsley head coach Joe Nettles, formerly of Washington County and Chilton County, is also assisting.

“They (Hughes and Lawley) are both doing a tremendous job and have practiced well,” said Nettles. “I think both of them will probably be starting.”

Hughes is one of two quarterbacks on the team – the other is Greenville’s Ryan Smith, who will be Hughes’ teammate and roommate at Huntingdon College this fall.

“There’s a lot of good players here,” Hughes said. “It’s a pretty cool deal, and it’s been a lot of fun.”

Lawley has practiced at both linebacker and fullback.

Nettles and both players said the week of practices will pay off this fall in college. Hughes will be at Huntingdon, while Lawley will go to the University of South Alabama.

“It’s good for them because they get to play against good competition,” Nettles said. “It will really help them in the long run.”

Lawley added, “I think there’s a gap between high school and college levels – this (game) works toward closing that.”

The All-Star teams will have a walkthrough of Alabama A&M University’s Louis Crews Stadium, site of the game, Friday morning before kickoff at 7 p.m.
