Chilton County turned out to vote in higher numbers than usual for runoff elections, according to the probate office.

7, 898 voted in the Republican primary for county sheriff between winner Kevin Davis and John Shearon while 7,842 voted for superintendent between winner Dave Hayden and Tommy Glasscock.

Newly elected Republican candidate for governor Robert Bentley accounted for 5,289 votes while Bradley Byrne received 2,505 votes, totaling to 7,794.

Probate Judge Bobby Martin said the turnout was higher than he expected, given runoffs usually see much fewer voters.

The county saw 170 votes for the state’s attorney general race, 7,357 for the commissioner of agriculture and industries and 6,976 for the public service commission place 1 race.

Chilton County currently has approximately 26,000 registered voters, according to Martin.
