The Maplesville Town Council passed a resolution Tuesday to install four surveillance cameras downtown, three exterior and one inside the town hall lobby.

Wolff Pack LLC Computer Repair and Accessories will install the equipment, which owner Tom Wolff said would take 4-5 days. The system comes with a one-year warranty.

The council passed a resolution to purchase the Maplesville Fire Department a new grill for one of its trucks as well as a reservoir tank, totaling to $292. Fire Chief Michael Abbott said they currently have no applications for volunteer employees.

Abbott also said the town will lose its forestry service beginning in September due to cutbacks within the state department. He said future backup could come from Hoover.

The council passed a resolution for the fire department to purchase $300 worth of items to give away to kids at the Back to School Bash.

Mayor Kurt Wallace recommended the town consider allowing CARE Ambulance to assign a vehicle to Maplesville. The council passed a resolution to allow it pending the approval of the fire department, which would discuss the matter later in the week.

The Maplesville Police Department will welcome part-time officer Wesley Rager on as a full-time member of the force now that his 90-day probation period has expired.

The police department is not currently investigating any cases. Chief Todd Ingram said they are awaiting the grand jury trials of suspects related to several burglaries and those charged with intimidating a witness in the coming weeks.

The council accepted bids on four vehicles previously ruled as surplus.

Roy Wallace purchased a 1980 Chevrolet C70 Derrick (Bucket) truck for $4,000.56.

Brian Giles purchased a 1984 Ford F800 dump truck for $4,100.

Penny Perrine purchased a 1986 Ford F150 pickup truck for $1,125.13.

Jeff Smitherman purchased a 1996 Plymouth Voyager van for $1,125.

The council rescheduled their safety meeting to July 22 at 6 p.m. in the public library.

The next council meeting will take place on August 10 at 6 p.m. in the public library.

Next year’s Small Town Alabama event will be held on April 9, 2011 and will be known as “Maplesville Heritage Days.”
