The Clanton AA all-star baseball team will travel to Enterprise this Friday to compete in the ages 7-8 statewide tournament.

The team will play its first game versus host team Enterprise at 7 p.m. at the Enterprise Youth Baseball Complex located at 311 East Brunson Street.

It is a 12-team double elimination tournament representing 11 districts. Clanton would play a maximum of five games if they advance to the championship round. The tournament ends with the championship game on July 13 at 11 a.m.

If Clanton wins on Friday, they will play again on Saturday at 1 p.m. If they lose, they play on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Team manager Chris Mims is proud of the effort put forth by the young men who have enjoyed plenty of success so far this summer, only losing one out of 10 games.

“We’re excited and working hard,” Mims said. “We look forward to playing some more good teams and hopefully coming home a state champion.”

Clanton’s only loss came to Valley Grande in the sub-district tournament, but they subsequently beat that team twice to win the championship. They then went undefeated in the district tournament.

The top two teams from this weekend’s tournament will earn spots to compete in the south regional tournament in Charleston, S.C. later this summer.

“We’ve got a great team,” said Mims, who played on a state champion little league team in 1990. “We’ve got a lot of confidence going in. We don’t know what to expect talent or competition-wise.”

The Clanton AAA all-star team, ages 9-10, finished in second place at its district tournament in Monroeville. The team previously won its sub-district but will not qualify for the state tournament.

The 11-12 age group all-stars will play later this month in Eufaula.
