80-plus compete in Peach Run Saturday

The seventh annual Peach Run on Saturday had a taste of international flair.

Michael Green, originally from near Manchester, England, won the 10K Men’s Division with a time of 32:06:842; and Stephane Hetherington from Toronto, Canada, won the 5K Men’s Division, clocking in at 16:27:393.

Green and Hetherington are training partners at Troy University. Green is a sports science professor, and Hetherington is a graduate student who coaches the cross country and track team.

The two left Troy at 4:15 Saturday morning to compete in the Peach Run. They said they had learned of the event from searching the Internet.

“It was a good event. Hopefully, we can put it on our calendar for next year,” Green said.

“It was hot,” said Hetherington. “We had been training hard.”

Winners in the Women’s Division were Rosita Vines of Clanton, who finished the 10K in 54:16; and Rachel Eidson of Birmingham, completing the 5K in a time of 22:11:605.

Vines said Saturday was the first time she had competed in a 10K race.

“I’ve only been running for two years,” she said. “It’s stress relief. I have five kids…and a grandbaby.”

Vines had won the 5K in her age group before, and Eidson was also a repeat winner.

“This was the first year I had a shoe to come untied while running,” Eidson said. “That was interesting.”

More than 80 runners participated in the run, which was hosted by Cornerstone Fitness and Wellness in Clanton. The route started at Cornerstone and went along Highway 145 to the former location of Adair School.
