Peach season kicks off Friday

Durbin Farms Market will host the second annual Kick-Off to Peach Season this Friday beginning at 11 a.m.

The event, sponsored in part by the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce, will feature a sampling of fresh Chilton County peaches and other local products, such as blueberries, nectarines and deli items.

Local and state dignitaries have been invited to participate, but the Kick-Off is open and free to the entire community.

“It’s just a big old celebration,” said event coordinator Ellis Stewart of 97.7 The Peach, a co-sponsor of the Kick-Off. “It’s gotten bigger this year. It’s a good thing to bring the family to.”

The event is being held later this year because of the late arrival of peaches, Stewart said. As a result, it is falling in line with the Chilton County Peach Festival, which begins for the community Saturday night with the Little Miss Peach Pageant.

Truckloads of Chilton County peaches will be at Friday’s Kick-Off, as well as door prizes and more. A ribbon cutting will take place at 11 a.m. to officially mark the “grand opening” of peach season.

“That’s why we do the kickoff is just to let people know our season’s here and it’s time to buy peaches,” said market owner Danny Jones.

The market is located at 2130 Seventh St. S. in Clanton.
