Three voting sites could change

Voters in three Chilton County precincts could be headed to a new polling place for the upcoming General Election in November.

The county commission passed three resolutions Monday proposing a change of venue for the precincts currently based at North Chilton Fire Department, Jemison Fire Department and Maplesville Fire Department.

If approved by the Justice Department, the North Chilton polling place would be moved to the nearby Providence No. 1 Baptist Church fellowship hall, Jemison’s new polling place would be located in the new municipal complex, and Maplesville’s would be in the library adjacent to Town Hall.

Each of the proposed changes would mean a more adequate facility, in terms of both space and accessibility.

“All of these would be a plus,” said Chilton County Probate Judge Bobby Martin, adding that he doesn’t expect the approval process to be a problem.

None of the polling places can be changed in time for the July runoffs, Martin said.

In other business, Telecom Audit Group conducted an audit of the county’s telephone system and found several unknown phone lines. The group confirmed with AT&T that three of the lines, two of which led to the old county jail, no longer exist.

Telecom could help the county recover up to $11,600 on its phone bill. Fifty percent of the recovered amount would go to Telecom.

The commission voted to enter into a contract with Telecom to proceed with the necessary steps toward lowering the county’s bill.

The commission also:
