The first Peach Classic exhibition baseball tournament gave some younger Tigers the opportunity to make an impression.

In a 10-3 win over Elmore County on Saturday, the final day of the three-day event at Clanton’s Jack Hayes Field, rising freshman Blake Teel took advantage of an opportunity to start on the mound. Teel held the visitors to two runs, both of which were unearned, on three hits in 3 2/3 innings pitched while striking out three.

With the win, CCHS went 3-1 in its first four games in the tournament. The Tigers play Chelsea Saturday night.

CCHS coach Josey Shannon said he thinks the event could provide his team some momentum heading into the season.

“There’s nothing like experience; you’ve got to play,” Shannon said and then singled out Teel’s performance. “Like him, you hope he takes that and runs with it.”

Some familiar names provided the offensive punch.

Cameron Cummings went 3-for-4 and scored three runs. Craig Headley had a pair of doubles, and Adam Minor had hits in all three of his at-bats, including a double, and drove in four runs.

The Classic included 13 games in all, involving local teams and traditional powers.

“It was good for the community, really,” Shannon said. “A lot of good teams came in here.”
