Clanton officials are taking steps to prevent wrecks at a dangerous city intersection.

A wreck involving a totaled vehicle occurred on April 30 at the intersection of Temple and Thrash roads, Clanton Street and Sanitation Superintendent Dale Collins said, and Police Chief Brian Stilwell said seven wrecks with injuries have occurred at the intersection since the beginning of the year.

The speed limit on Temple is being lowered to 35 miles per hour, Collins said, and workers have painted warning messages on the road leading up to the intersection. Also, police will continue to monitor the speed of traffic near the intersection.

“We’ve been doing extra patrols at the intersection there for speeding, and we’ll continue to do so with the change to the speed limit,” Stilwell said.

The speed limit is 35 on part of Temple but was 45 across the intersection. The speed limit is 25 in school zones along the road.

Collins said the only alternative would be to make the intersection a 4-way stop, which could significantly slow traffic, especially during mornings and afternoons because of the schools near the intersection.

“It’s always been a bad intersection just because people come up on it way too fast,” Collins said.
