Federal funds will pay for the improvement of two CSX railroad crossings in Chilton County.

The county commission accepted a plan Monday night for the regular maintenance of pavement markings and signs near the crossings located at County Road 29 and County Road 623. Both are located just off Highway 31 south of Thorsby.

County Administrator Vanessa Hendrick said federal aid would fund 100 percent of the project.

In other business, the commission accepted a bid of $69,990 for a pre-fabricated community shelter to be installed at Union Grove Fire Department.

The bid was returned by Aquamarine Enterprises of Danville, the same company that installed an identical shelter in Maplesville. The bid will be awarded pending approval of County EMA Director Bill Collum.

A second shelter will be constructed at East Chilton Fire Department. Both will be funded by a federal hazard mitigation grant. The county is required to pay 25 percent of the total amount.

Currently, shelters are located at Enterprise Fire Department, West Chilton Fire Department, Maplesville and the basement of Clanton City Hall. The plan is to have a shelter located within 10 minutes driving distance of any residence in the county.

Approved a property insurance renewal with Davis & Davis Insurance for $37,877; up slightly from last year

Approved a liability insurance renewal with Mims Marine for $334,670; up by $15,786 from last year

Posted a vacancy for a part-time position at Minooka Park

Approved a grant extension on an RV campground at Minooka Park; the grant will be extended to June 1

Went into executive session for the discussion of a pending legal matter and good name and character, at the request of Allen Caton and Red Turnipseed.
