Local track and field teams hope strong showings in the weekend section meets will result in the chance to compete for state championships.

Chilton County High School coach Matt Maddox said one of his team’s strongest events is the 4x100m relay. Runners Will Cooper, Richard Hilliard, Alan Lucas and Allen White have a good opportunity to advance to state, Maddox said.

Megan Lawley, Kanekia Davis and Alyssa Riley have had strong showings previously. Isaac Ford, discus; Chase Brown, discus and shot put; and James Boswell, discus, have good chances too, Maddox said.

Isabella hopes to build off the success it had last year. Blake Lawley should contend again in shot put, while Davis Ratliff will run the 1-mile and 2-mile events. Sarah Graham also looks good in the 800m and 1600m runs, Coach Lanny Jones said. Kennan Lewis, James Jones, Austin Parker and Tyler Smith will run the 4x400m relay for the Mustangs.

Maplesville will return to sectionals this year, after not fielding a team last year.

Coach Brent Hubbert said the team is looking for Cameron Morrow to compete for championships in several events. Morrow will compete in the 100m spring, long jump, 300 hurdles and 110 high hurdles.

Also for Maplesville, Brinttain Hill will compete in the 200m and 800m events; Demetrius Parker in the 100m and 200m events; Alex Smith in the 800m and mile events; Anthony Johnson in the 400m, 300 hurdles, long jump and triple jump events; and Keith Shields in the 200m, 110 high hurdles and 300 hurdles events.

Thorsby coach Ginger Williams also predicts several of her athletes have a great shot at advancing to state.

She mentioned Marcus Bray in the 100m sprint, long jump and triple jump; Dillian Simmons in the 200m and 400m sprints; Sam Gasson in the 800m run; David Roldan in the mile; Cody Moseley, in the mile; and Cameron Castleberry, in the mile, as all having great shots to advance.

Williams also highlighted Sade’ Archie in the 100m sprint; Sam Cifuentes in the 100m sprint, 300 hurdles and mile; and Megan Sanchez in javelin.

The top six athletes in each event qualify for the state tournament.
