Most would probably think football season is the busiest time of the year for those responsible for covering high school sports for a local newspaper.

Friday nights are long and hectic, to be sure, but there’s actually much more going on during the spring. And playoff time is when things really get crazy.

This week is a great example. Tennis sectionals began on Tuesday and will conclude on Thursday. Both Chilton County and Jemison have teams that are competing in those events.

Track sectionals are Friday and Saturday, and will include local squads from CCHS, Isabella, Jemison, Maplesville and Thorsby.

Also on Friday, and possibly Saturday, is Thorsby’s series against Ranburne in the second round of the state baseball playoffs. The Rebels are the only local team to make it past the first round, and they are good enough to go a long way in the postseason, so the whole county should be behind the team regardless of where you call home.

An interesting event to look for is the second Chilton County Golf Tournament. Just like last year, when the tournament was almost accidental, CCHS, Isabella, Jemison and Thorsby will all compete. Unfortunately for local golf fans, the tournament this season will be held at Montevallo Golf Course.

Softball is seeing its regular season wind down and area tournaments begin. And then there’s youth league baseball and softball, whose seasons are just getting underway.
