Voter registration deadlines approaching

As the June 1 primary elections peek their noses around the corner, potential voters better know the deadlines to register.

The registration deadline for primary election voting is May 21. For the November elections, the deadline is Oct. 22.

Those who wish to vote can apply at the Chilton County Courthouse in downtown Clanton, that is, if they can spare five minutes.

Donna Wyatt, chairperson of the Chilton County Board of Registrars, said the process doesn’t take long at all and only requires a person’s name, birthday and driver’s license or the last four digits of his or her social security number.

The registrar office is located in the basement of the courthouse and is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office does not close for lunch.

Wyatt said applications attached to the door may be picked up between 4-5 p.m. after the registrar office closes. The applications must be returned in person at the courthouse or by mail.

She said local candidates are even distributing registration forms. If you see them on a city street, they might even have some forms in their car they’ll give you, she said.

The registrar office also offers mail-in registration forms. Residents can call 755-3820 or visit the office for more information at .

Those in need of an absentee ballot must visit with the circuit clerk’s office to request one.

Wyatt said any common problems or misconceptions people have about the voting or registration process is getting dates wrong and forgetting deadlines.
